Planets in the houses
What the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and North Node mean in each of the twelve houses of a birth chart.
The house a planet falls in says where in life its themes tend to play out. Venus in the 7th house speaks to partnership; the same Venus in the 10th, to work and reputation.

- The Sun in the houses
In astrology, the Sun stands for identity and purpose: what you want to put yourself into and be recognized for.
- The Moon in the houses
The Moon describes emotional needs and habits: what helps you settle, and how you react before you've had time to think.
- Mercury in the houses
Mercury is the way you think, talk and take in information: how you explain things, ask questions and make sense of what you hear.
- Venus in the houses
Venus stands for affection, pleasure and taste: the relationships, things and experiences you value most.
- Mars in the houses
Mars is drive: how you go after what you want, deal with friction and spend your energy.
- Jupiter in the houses
Jupiter is linked with growth, meaning and generosity: the places where you want more room, more knowledge or a wider view.
- Saturn in the houses
Saturn stands for responsibility, limits and the maturity that comes with time: the lessons that take time and the structures you build to hold things together.
- The North Node in the houses
Modern astrology reads the North Node as a direction of growth: something that doesn't come easily but moves you forward.
What the houses are
A birth chart is divided into twelve houses, each linked with an area of life: money, home, partnership, work and so on. A planet in a house brings its themes into that area.
Houses depend on the exact time and place of birth. As the Earth turns, every planet passes through all twelve houses in about a day, so without a birth time the houses can't be placed reliably.
Your birth chart shows which house each of your planets is in and how they work together. The reading on Sky & Story is free; for houses, you'll need your birth time.
