Mars in the houses

Mars in each of the twelve houses of a birth chart: how each placement can show up in everyday life, and the astrology behind it.

Mars is drive: how you go after what you want, deal with friction and spend your energy.

Its house shows where you tend to push hardest, and where tempers are most likely to flare.

  1. Mars in the 1st house

You tend to jump into things quickly, and people feel your energy right away.

  2. Mars in the 2nd house

You put real effort into earning and building your own resources.

  3. Mars in the 3rd house

You argue with energy and may like winning a debate.

  4. Mars in the 4th house

Home can be where you spend your energy: renovations, moves, hands-on projects.

  5. Mars in the 5th house

You bring energy to sports, creative work and romance.

  6. Mars in the 6th house

Everyday tasks give you somewhere to put your energy, and you may take on more than your share.

  7. Mars in the 7th house

Your closest relationships may stir up strong feelings: attraction, rivalry or both.

  8. Mars in the 8th house

You bring intensity to intimacy, shared money and hard situations.

  9. Mars in the 9th house

You stand up for what you believe in and may defend your views with passion.

  10. Mars in the 10th house

You may put much of your energy into getting ahead at work.

  11. Mars in the 11th house

You bring energy to groups and shared causes.

  12. Mars in the 12th house

You may keep anger to yourself and only notice it later as tiredness or tension.

What the houses are

A birth chart is divided into twelve houses, each linked with an area of life: money, home, partnership, work and so on. A planet in a house brings its themes into that area.

Houses depend on the exact time and place of birth. As the Earth turns, every planet passes through all twelve houses in about a day, so without a birth time the houses can't be placed reliably.

Your birth chart shows which house each of your planets is in and how they work together. The reading on Sky & Story is free; for houses, you'll need your birth time.
