The North Node in the houses

The North Node in each of the twelve houses of a birth chart: how each placement can show up in everyday life, and the astrology behind it.

Modern astrology reads the North Node as a direction of growth: something that doesn't come easily but moves you forward. It isn't a planet but a point: the place where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's apparent path through the sky, heading north.

Its house shows the part of life where that stretch is likely to show up.

  1. The North Node in the 1st house

Growth for you may come from taking the lead on your own behalf.

  2. The North Node in the 2nd house

Growth may come from building your own sense of value and self-reliance.

  3. The North Node in the 3rd house

Growth for you may lie in everyday conversations and asking simple questions.

  4. The North Node in the 4th house

Room to grow may lie in building a sense of home and inner security.

  5. The North Node in the 5th house

Growth for you may come through play, creativity and being seen.

  6. The North Node in the 6th house

Growth may come through daily routine and practical care.

  7. The North Node in the 7th house

Growth for you may lie in partnership and real give-and-take.

  8. The North Node in the 8th house

Growth may come through deep trust and sharing.

  9. The North Node in the 9th house

Growth for you may come through travel and study that broaden your view.

  10. The North Node in the 10th house

Growth may involve taking on a public role and long-term goals.

  11. The North Node in the 11th house

Growth for you may lie in friendships, groups and shared causes.

  12. The North Node in the 12th house

Growth may come through rest, reflection and letting go of control.

What the houses are

A birth chart is divided into twelve houses, each linked with an area of life: money, home, partnership, work and so on. A planet in a house brings its themes into that area.

Houses depend on the exact time and place of birth. As the Earth turns, every planet passes through all twelve houses in about a day, so without a birth time the houses can't be placed reliably.

Your birth chart shows which house each of your planets is in and how they work together. The reading on Sky & Story is free; for houses, you'll need your birth time.
