Mercury in the houses

Mercury in each of the twelve houses of a birth chart: how each placement can show up in everyday life, and the astrology behind it.

Mercury is the way you think, talk and take in information: how you explain things, ask questions and make sense of what you hear.

Its house shows which conversations and subjects tend to occupy your mind.

  1. Mercury in the 1st house

You tend to think out loud and say what's on your mind early.

  2. Mercury in the 2nd house

Your thinking is practical: you want to know what an idea is worth and how it can be used.

  3. Mercury in the 3rd house

Words come easily to you, and you often have the right phrase ready.

  4. Mercury in the 4th house

You often do your best thinking at home, in a familiar chair or at the kitchen table.

  5. Mercury in the 5th house

You think playfully and like ideas that are fun to share.

  6. Mercury in the 6th house

Your mind is good with systems: lists, schedules and quicker ways to get things done.

  7. Mercury in the 7th house

You think best in dialogue and may need someone to bounce ideas off.

  8. Mercury in the 8th house

Your mind is drawn to what's hidden: motives, secrets, the question behind the question.

  9. Mercury in the 9th house

You enjoy big ideas, languages and conversations that cross borders.

  10. Mercury in the 10th house

Your words may play a big part in your career: writing, teaching or negotiating.

  11. Mercury in the 11th house

Your mind thrives on brainstorming and shared projects.

  12. Mercury in the 12th house

Much of your thinking happens quietly, before you share it.

What the houses are

A birth chart is divided into twelve houses, each linked with an area of life: money, home, partnership, work and so on. A planet in a house brings its themes into that area.

Houses depend on the exact time and place of birth. As the Earth turns, every planet passes through all twelve houses in about a day, so without a birth time the houses can't be placed reliably.

Your birth chart shows which house each of your planets is in and how they work together. The reading on Sky & Story is free; for houses, you'll need your birth time.
