The Sun in the houses

The Sun in each of the twelve houses of a birth chart: how each placement can show up in everyday life, and the astrology behind it.

In astrology, the Sun stands for identity and purpose: what you want to put yourself into and be recognized for.

Its house suggests the area of life where expressing who you are tends to matter most, whether that's work, home, friendship or something else.

  1. The Sun in the 1st house

You tend to be noticed before you've said much: people pick up on how you walk into a room or start a project.

  2. The Sun in the 2nd house

You feel more like yourself when you're building something solid: savings, skills, things you can hold in your hands.

  3. The Sun in the 3rd house

You come alive in conversation: a good exchange with a neighbor, a sibling or a colleague can set the tone for your whole day.

  4. The Sun in the 4th house

Home is where you recharge, and also where you find out who you are.

  5. The Sun in the 5th house

You light up when you get to create, play or show something you've made.

  6. The Sun in the 6th house

You find yourself through work and the rhythm of ordinary days.

  7. The Sun in the 7th house

You often discover who you are through close partnerships, in love and at work.

  8. The Sun in the 8th house

You're drawn to what lies beneath the surface: shared money, trust, the conversations people tend to avoid.

  9. The Sun in the 9th house

You feel most like yourself when your world gets bigger: a trip, a course, a book that changes your mind.

  10. The Sun in the 10th house

Your work and public role are a big part of who you are.

  11. The Sun in the 11th house

Working with friends on a shared project can give you a strong sense of purpose.

  12. The Sun in the 12th house

Much of your strength works quietly, behind the scenes.

What the houses are

A birth chart is divided into twelve houses, each linked with an area of life: money, home, partnership, work and so on. A planet in a house brings its themes into that area.

Houses depend on the exact time and place of birth. As the Earth turns, every planet passes through all twelve houses in about a day, so without a birth time the houses can't be placed reliably.

Your birth chart shows which house each of your planets is in and how they work together. The reading on Sky & Story is free; for houses, you'll need your birth time.
